How to read your electricity bill like a solar consultant
Your electricity bill contains more information than you probably realize. Most homeowners look at the total amount, feel a brief wave of frustration, and move on. But inside that statement is a roadmap to understanding exactly where your money goes — and where solar could save you the most.
The number at the bottom of your bill is the least useful piece of information on the entire statement.
It tells you what you owe. It doesn't tell you why.
A $320 bill could mean you consumed a massive amount of energy at a low rate. Or a moderate amount at a high rate. Or a normal amount at a normal rate with a pile of fees and surcharges stacked on top.
Without breaking the total into its components, there's no way to know which lever would actually reduce it. More efficiency? Different rate plan? Solar? Battery? The answer depends entirely on where the money is actually going.
The first step to understanding your energy costs is ignoring the total and reading the line items.
Find your rate structure
Somewhere on your bill — usually in small print — is your rate plan name and pricing structure.
This is the single most important piece of information for evaluating solar potential.
Fixed-rate plans charge the same price per kilowatt-hour regardless of when you use energy. Variable-rate plans fluctuate monthly based on market conditions. Time-of-use plans charge different rates depending on the hour of the day.
Each structure has different implications for solar savings.
Fixed-rate plans offer the most predictable offset — every kilowatt-hour your panels produce saves the same amount. Time-of-use plans create a bigger opportunity because solar production peaks during hours when rates are often transitioning from low to high, and battery storage can shift usage away from the most expensive windows entirely.
Knowing your rate structure tells you not just how much solar could save, but when it saves the most.

Track your consumption pattern
Most bills include a 12-month consumption history — a bar chart or table showing kilowatt-hours used per month over the past year.
This is your energy fingerprint.
Look for seasonal patterns. Does consumption spike dramatically in summer? That indicates heavy HVAC dependence and a strong case for solar in a sun-intensive market. Is consumption relatively flat year-round? That suggests a consistent baseline load that solar can offset steadily.
The shape of your annual consumption curve determines how a solar system should be sized. A home with extreme summer peaks needs a different approach than one with steady year-round demand.
Solar consultants look at this chart before anything else. It tells them more about your home's energy behavior than any other single data point.
Identify the fees you can't avoid
Every electricity bill includes charges beyond consumption. Connection fees, delivery charges, transmission costs, renewable energy surcharges, and regulatory assessments all add fixed costs that appear regardless of how much energy you use.
These fees typically range from $15 to $50 per month depending on the utility and market.
Solar doesn't eliminate these charges. Even a home that produces 100% of its own energy still owes connection and delivery fees because the home remains physically connected to the grid.
Understanding this upfront prevents a common disappointment. Solar dramatically reduces the consumption portion of your bill — which is typically 70% to 85% of the total — but the fixed fees remain.
Knowing exactly what those fees are sets realistic expectations for what your post-solar bill will actually look like.
